All about Dry Eyes
The eye is dependent on the flow of tears for its supply of moisture and lubrication. This allows for vision and comfort to be maintained. Tears are the most important part of the eye’s lubrication system. They are a combination of water (for moisture), oils (for lubrication), mucus (for even spreading across the eye), and antibodies. Tears are secreted by special glands around the eyes. Dry eyes are a result of an imbalance in the tear system.
When the eyes are not kept adequately moist by the tears, the symptoms of dry eyes include:
- Pain
- Sensitivity to light
- A gritty sensation
- A feeling of a foreign body in the eye
- Itching
- Redness
- Blurry vision
In some circumstances, a dry eye sufferer will have excess tears running down the cheeks. This happens why the eye knows it’s not getting enough moisture and sends a distress signal through the nervous system. As a result, the eye is flooded by moisture but the tears seen are not normal tears with rich composition. They will wash any debris away but they will not coat the eye surface properly.
In addition to an imbalance in the tear system of the eye, dry eyes can be caused by the drying out of the tear film. Other things that can cause dry eyes are:
- The natural aging process
- Side effects of antihistamines and birth control pills
- Various diseases that affect the ability to make tears
- Structural problems with the eyes that prevent them from closing properly
