The Parts of the Eye
The eye is the organ that allows us to see. It is very important but also very complex. It exists in a system of layers that are all very important and delicate.
The part of the eye most of us think we can see is the cornea. The cornea is a soft layer of transparent tissue that covers the delicate and complex layers of the eye. If the cornea is damaged, vision will be negatively affected. Fortunately, the cornea also happens to be one of the parts of the body that has an amazing speed of recovery.
After the cornea, the next layer of the eye includes the sclera, iris, and pupil. The sclera is the white part of the eye, and the iris is the colored portion of the eye. The pupil is in the middle of the iris and has the amazing ability to expand and to contract to ensure that the correct amount of light makes it to the back of the eye.
The lens is behind the iris and the pupil. It is in charge of focusing the light the pupil lets in and directing it through the somewhat liquid center to the retina. The liquid center is called the vitreous humor. This fluid protects the optic nerve and the retina and helps the eye retain its shape.
The retina is the area at the back of the eye that is very sensitive to light. It is equipped with rods and cones to translate the light that has been focused by the lens into an image. Rods are located along the edges of the retina and are very sensitive to movement. They are responsible for night vision because they are so much more sensitive to subtle changes in light. These subtle changes translate into shapes and peripheral movement. Cones give humans the ability to see in color. They are located mostly in the middle of the retina. This area is called the fovea. The fovea is covered by the macula.
