The Eye Smart Campaign

The Eye Smart Campaign is a public awareness campaign. It is trying to empower Americans to take control of their eye health. The campaign is sponsored by and partnering with the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The American Academy of Ophthalmology is the world’s large association of eye physicians and surgeons.

Part of the reason for the Eye Smart Campaign is the projected increase in the number of eye diseases in the world. Currently, there are roughly 28 million different types of eye diseases, all of varying severity. By 2020, the Eye Smart Campaign expects there to be roughly 43 million diseases worldwide. That’s a pretty drastic increase in just 12 years.

Another problem facing eye doctors is the belief by the majority of Americans that they are not at risk for any form of eye disease. In addition, Americans are unaware of the causes and risk factors for eye disease. To combat this, the Eye Smart Campaign plans to raise public awareness of the 5 major eyes diseases. The 5 diseases are age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye, and glaucoma.

The goal of the Eye Smart Campaign is to limit the impact of eye diseases in the future by raising awareness of all of their risk factors today.
