Mycotic Keratitis: A Corneal Infection
Mycotic Keratitis is a corneal fungal infection. The cornea is a portion of the eye that plays an important role in vision. The cornea is responsible for protecting the eye from dust, pollen, water, and other substances.
In addition to protecting the eyes, the cornea focuses light waves on the retina which enables us to see. Unfortunately, the cornea does not have its own blood supply and so is vulnerable to infection. Because of this, infections are tough to treat. Generally, infections are treated by antibiotics which are transmitted through the blood stream. In addition, white blood cells which are responsible for treating infections also are carried through the blood. This is why it is difficult to treat corneal infections.
Mycotic Keratitis is one type of a fungal infection of the cornea. When it occurs, it is typically treated by topical antibiotics initially. Topical antibiotics are administered in the form of eye drops. If this doesn’t work, a doctor will generally next prescribe an oral antibiotic in hopes that it reaches the cornea via the fluid behind the cornea.
Surgery is the option that follows antibiotics. Corneal scraping allows a doctor to remove the infected portions of the cornea by scraping the surface with a special instrument. The cornea typically heals quickly and without scarring after this is performed. A keratectomy allows a surgeon to remove the spots caused by a deep corneal injury as well as infected areas using a microscope.
If these options are unsuccessful, a corneal transplant may be the final option.
