Eye Infections: Blepharitis

Blepharitis is a type of eye infection which causes an inflammation of the eyelid. Common, basic symptoms of the disorder include red, irritated, itchy eyelids and dandruff-like scales on the eyelids and lashes. Blepharitis is a common eye problem that affects people of all ages equally.

This eye condition can be caused by bacteria or skin conditions such as dandruff of the scalp or acne rosacea. The condition is uncomfortable; however, it is not contagious and generally won’t cause any permanent damage to a person’s vision.

There are two main types of blepharitis: Anterior and Posterior. Anterior blepharitis occurs at the outside front edge of the eyelid, where the eyelashes are attached. So basically, if the eye lashes are a divider between the inside and outside portions of the eyelid, the inside, or posterior, is the side closer to the eye and the outside, or anterior, is the portion of the eyelid closer to the cheek bone.

When a person is afflicted with blepharitis, he or she may experience a gritty or burning sensation in the eyes. Other symptoms someone suffering from blepharitis may experience include excessive tear production, red and or swollen eyelids, dry eyes, and crusting of the eyelids.

For many people who have been affected by blepharitis, the condition causes only minor irritation and itching. The disease can lead to more severe signs and symptoms. These include blurring of vision, missing or misdirected eyelashes, inflammation of the cornea, and inflammation of other eye tissue.

To treat blepharitis, a good eyelid hygiene routine and a regular cleaning routine will control the condition. If a person’s case is caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics will do the trick.
