The Brief History of Contact Lens Construction

The earliest contact lenses were constructed out of glass. These contact lenses were often did more bad than good, causing irritations and damages to the eyes of wearers. Uncomfortable contact wearers didn’t have to wait too long until Williams Feinbloom created a much more comfortable contact lens from polymethyl merthacrylate, also known as Plexiglas. Considered, “hard” lenses, these lenses proved much softer than the glass contacts that came before them.

Although the hard lenses were a big improvement on the glass contacts of the past, these lenses had problems of their own. The material that they were constructed out of did not allow oxygen to reach the cornea, which caused many other eye health risks. This problem was alleviated with the introduction of oxygen-permeable properties so that oxygen could safely reach the cornea. Despite several developments, hard lenses were still not very comfortable when worn for longer periods of time.

Soft contact lenses were not developed until almost 120 years after the first hard contact lens was made. Otto Wichterlle is credited with the production of the first soft lenses in the 1960s. Soft lenses were a big improvement on the hard lenses and were more comfortable to wear. They allowed for plenty of oxygen to reach the cornea and could be worn for longer periods of time.

Just before the year 2000, silicone hydrogels were developed. These flexible lenses are available for overnight use as well as day only use. Although the oxygen permeability of these lenses was much improved from older contact solution designs, the contacts had a tendency to dry out faster, causing irritation to the eyes. This problem was remedied with the introduction of contact lens solutions designed specifically to re-wet the lenses.

As time passes, there is no doubt that scientists will find new ways to improve contact lenses. The focus now has turned to the need to develop safer solution to cleanse and disinfect contact lenses as more and more recalls are made for contact lens solutions. Until the advancements made in contact lens construction are made in contact lens solution development, more people will suffer from dangerous eye infections caused by defective contact lens solution.
